Self-Reflection

As I discussed in my narrative essay, English was not my best subject. Always avoiding any reading and writing assignments that I had to complete. However, that does not fly in college. The time and place finally came when I had to face my barrier in language. I enjoyed the topic that was assigned to the class because I was able to release the emotions and thoughts that were bottled up inside me. I was unable to tell anyone because of my fear of getting criticized and judged. As well as, I liked how the readings introduce to in class helped me relate and know that there are others in the same situation as me. It guided me as I wrote my narrative essay. As I read my paper over and over, I felt extremely proud of myself because I had finally written a literacy piece that I would never have thought I could have done; because of my lack of confidence and tendency to underestimate my abilities. This assignment made me realize the beauty of words. Not only was I able to discover the potential I had in me, but I was also able to know myself, know that what I underwent impacted me positively.

I know my professor had given me this assignment with the purpose to reflect a time in my life when literacy impacted me in a significant way, as well as she wanted me to understand the concept of rhetorical situations. To be honest, I did not know what rhetorical situations were before this course. Learning and comprehending new terminology in class, makes me feel eager to learn more. I apply my understanding to rhetorical devices to strength my narrative. My purpose for writing this is to share my struggle in English that resulted in a lost identity crisis at an early age. I wanted to express the feelings and thoughts I was facing, to help any reader know that even though you may be at your lowest point in life, you should find the courage to improve yourself through literacy. As for my stance, I used a calm and open tone to give the reader a relax vibe when reading my story. I wanted the readers to understand what I had endured as well as, convince my audience that literacy was crucial in a person’s life. However, for me to deliver my message correctly was through a narrative essay.

I can say that I am in a good state of mind now, it was not easy, but anything you desire, won’t be handed to you, it requires hard work. I am grateful for being given this task because it allowed me to unlock my identity more. Also, it encouraged me to incorporate rereading into my daily routines.  Every word, every sentence, every paragraph, come from my heart and that what I truly enjoyed.
